Why did I create Foodbanks.co.uk?

This site was created out of a personal experience that opened my eyes to the hidden struggles many people face.

June 2024 at a family BBQ, a conversation changed my perspective forever. 

A family member began casually asking me what I knew about food banks. At the time, I knew very little and didn’t think much of it – until I realised she wasn’t asking out of curiosity. She was asking for herself.

Embarrassed and hesitant to share her struggles, she eventually told me that she needed help. After her recent separation from her long term partner, she had to move into rented accommodation and wasn’t earning enough to cover the basics, including food. I felt sad because this was someone I’d grown up with and I hadn’t spotted the signs of her getting into trouble, and also felt useless as I knew nothing about food banks, so had no answers for her. 

I didn’t know how foodbanks worked, how you go about accessing one, the difference between a foodbank and a food shelter or even if there was one in our local area. 

Of course, I offered my support and did my best to help her out of her immediate situation until she got back on her feet, and she’s now in a much better place, but that upsetting experience stayed with me.

Researching food banks

Shortly after that, I began researching food banks online, only to find fragmented, conflicting and often incomplete information. So I realised there was a need for a comprehensive, easy-to-access resource for people like my family member. People who need support and don’t know where to start. That’s why I created FoodBanks.co.uk.

Its taken several months to get here, but I’ve now built this site with the aim of providing practical, helpful, and clear information about food banks in the UK. Basically, We’ve done all the research and trawled through all the noise on the internet for you, so you don’t have to! 

So whether you’re looking for support, hoping to volunteer, or maybe want to donate food to your local foodbank, we have the Foodbank FAQs section to help answer all your questions.
